Searching as a guest
How can I search for images in the database without my own personal login ID?
- You can look for images in the database without a user account by using the guest access feature. Or simply enter the key word(s) for your search in the search field on the homepage. However, with guest access you only get a limited number of hits, no meta information and you cannot do high-resolution downloads.
Am I allowed to use the images I find?
- No! Unauthorised use is illegal and will be prosecuted. However, you can buy the images from our medicalpicture merchandising shop, e.g. as posters or on t-shirts.

Searching when logged in
As a registered user, how do I search the image database?
- In order to be able to search the database using your personal user account, first log in on the homepage. This takes you to the database. You can now search by word or phrase for individual images or selections (>Go!), for complete folders covering a particular category (>find folder) or for pictures within a particular folder (>in folder). By clicking on an image, you can see a layout preview and the associated text.
How does the image search work?
- The search is based on captions, key words and the thesaurus. This is information that you can only obtain if you are a registered user. Folder names and image titles provide you with a rough summary of possible search words.
I couldn't find what I was looking for. What can I do?
- Try searching using a related term. Or use the asterisk (*) as a wildcard at the start or end of the word, or for components of a word. For example: '*stream' - results will include 'bloodstream'; 'park*' - results will include 'Parkinson'. Of course, you can also e-mail the picture desk. We'll get back to you as quickly as possible.

Browser Error
What browsers can I use to search the image database?
- All popular browsers are suitable for searching and downloading. These include: Internet Explorer, Mozilla, Netscape, Safari and others.
I'm using my personal log in details, but I can't get into the database. What am I doing wrong?
- Your browser must accept cookies. You personal settings, including your access details, are stored in a cookie on your computer. You can turn cookies on and off, or even delete them. For most browsers, you will find this function under 'Settings'.
Even though I've entered the right access details, I only appear as a 'guest' in the image database. What do I have to do?
- To gain access to the full functionality of the image database, you must activate cookies in your web browser. When you have done this, relaunch your browser.
What should I do if I get an error message after logging in or after doing a search?
- Error messages like 'Error in pixel box server' or similar can nearly always be cleared by closing your browser and then relaunching it. If this does not clear the fault, please contact our support desk.

Licensing information
What licensing options do you offer?
- medicalpicture provides only high quality, rights managed (RM) picture material that is all subject to licence. We do not offer royalty free (RF) images.
What does 'subject to licence' mean?
- Images that are subject to licence are licensed based on how they are going to be used. The fee for using each picture is calculated by using several factors such as size, position and duration of use. When ordering our rights managed images customers must provide the information we require to define the usage rights to be issued.
What does 'royalty free' mean?
- Charges for royalty free images are usually based on the size of the photo you need rather than specifically what you want it for. You do not have to pay any additional fees based on the intended use. The quality of such pictures is usually limited in comparison to rights managed image material.
- Charging structure
Prices and fees
How can I find out a picture's price?
- Registered users can access our price lists in the image database and download them as PDFs. You can also send us an e-mail with the image number, intended use, circulation details, illustration size etc, and we will calculate the price and send you a quotation by e-mail.
Why do the fees you charge vary so much?
- The fee we charge is based on the how the image is going to be used - whether for advertising, a brochure, magazine etc.
Why have I got to pay different prices for photos, SEM photos and illustrations, even when I am going to use them in the same way?
- Basic fees for our pictures are largely based on how much work is involved in producing them. This can be quite a lot for medical illustrations and even more for specialised photography, e.g. using a scanning electron microscope (SEM).
What does it cost to download images?
- Downloading images for layout costs €50 or €75 per picture, plus usage fee. Other arrangements by agreement.
Does the download fee include the right to use the image?
- No! It is purely a fee for layout. An additional usage fee is payable for every picture.
When do images that are used have to be paid for?
Image management
What does 'image management' mean?
- Image management means bundling together, cataloguing and managing all of a company's picture material into one image database.
What are the benefits of image management for me?
- With image management, all of a company's images are in one central place, collected together in a consistent format and available around the clock. Savings in research time and costs are enormous.
How can I control access to the images for different groups of people?
- Access rights are controlled by issuing passwords. Journalists, for example, can thus be given access to different pictures than employees.
What do I have to do to implement image management for my company?
- To be able to implement image management, you must first gather together the company's entire collection of picture material (e.g. slides, photos, digital images etc.). We will then save and archive these in a consistent format.
What does it cost to implement image management?
- There is a basic, one-off fee for archiving images and setting up an image database. There is then a further monthly fee for hosting, traffic and image data management. Fee levels are based on the size of the picture archive and the amount of work involved in cataloguing it. We work out appropriate quotations on an individual basis.
